Description

Modern Marginal Marine Clastic Depositional Systems

by Dr. Walter (Jerry) Sexton

REGISTRATION

The eight hour seminar will cover a variety of modern clastic depositional systems of shallow marine settings.  The lectures will focus on sedimentary processes of deposition and their resultant three-dimensional characteristics.  The principal area presented will be the central coastline of South Carolina.  Emphasis will be placed on Holocene clastic deposits which were deposited within the past 4,000 years.

The focus on the three-dimensional characteristics of these depositional systems will be used to demonstrate the lateral and vertical variability of facies.  Lateral variability of facies will be stressed in relation to conventional and resource play horizontal drilling programs.  Additionally, the evolution of Quaternary strata will be presented in a chronostratigraphic context.  Abundant subsurface data will be presented, providing lithogic interpretations for the modern depositional systems. This seminar will include a review of the following: sediment provenance to beaches and beach processes, barrier islands (shoreface) and the back barrier, tidal inlets and tidal deltas, shelf sedimentation and estuaries.

Walter Sexton is a coastal geomorphologist/sedimentologist with over 35 years of professional experience.  He received his PhD from the University of South Carolina and is a broad based geoscientist with experience in surface mining (heavy mineral, peat, sand & gravel), groundwater pollution, sediment geotechnical/environmental studies related to dredging, and shoreline mapping for contingency planning.  Dr. Sexton has taught and co-taught over 175 week-long seminars on "Modern Clastic Depositional Environments" principally along the South Carolina coastline but also internationally. These field seminars have been a valuable educational opportunity for organizations dealing in both petroleum and groundwater studies, including AAPG, Nautilus World, Ltd., BP America, Suncor, Conoco/Phillips, Encana, Apache, Chesapeake Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, and SEPM.

Dr. Sexton is the founder and president of Athena Technologies, Inc., a company with over 25 years of experience specializing in shallow stratigraphic studies of modern depositional systems.   Walter has conducted research in Europe (France), the Middle East (Kuwait and Abu Dhabi), Africa (Nigeria),  Central  America (Panama), the  Caribbean  and  throughout much of the United States including Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands.  In 2006 he presented the Annual Honorary Address for the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  He has participated in numerous basin studies from the Gulf Coast through the Western Canadian Basin and published numerous papers on modern clastic deposition ranging from fluvial/alluvial valley topics to the continental shelf margin.
